This prayer of which you each have a copy points to the old rugged cross.

I think I would have to say that throughout my life, my favorite hymns have been those

that are about the cross.

When I was very small, I began singing those hymns.

We sang Jesus, keep me near the cross.

In our family prayers, we sang beneath the cross of Jesus.

And by the time I was 14, I don't remember if I said it before then, but I think I used

to tell people that beneath the cross of Jesus was my favorite hymn.

It still is one of my favorites, and there are so many.

But I love the second stanza of that old gospel song, O that old rugged cross, so despised

by the world, has a wondrous attraction for me.

That's what means to be an instrument of peace.
