I've made lots of programs in Pakistan and I'm always interested in counterculture, but this time

around the story was way more complicated than I originally thought it would be.

There's a clash going on, not just as you might expect

between transgender people and the establishment, but between the old and new god.

So this is a story about gender and it's also about the generation gap.

In this university auditorium,

She's a transgender woman,

and this is transgender Visibility Day.

Gender is in your head and sex is between in your legs.

I'm a transgender woman.

If that's my right.

This is Karachi, a city where societal norms are fiercely prescriptive and where standing out can get you

killed.

Such campaigning might seem brave, brazen even. But to many in Pakistan, gender fluidity is nothing new.

For centuries Pakistani society has had its own answer for people who don't define their sex as either male or female.
