Summary

We discuss what we’ve seen so far this week in Doha and Rotterdam, including a barnstormer between Garbine Muguruza and Aryna Sabalenka, progress for Kei Nishikori, the end of Stefanos Tsitsipas’ losing streak in doubles, and Andy Murray’s 7-5, 6-2 defeat against Andrey Rublev. Hear part of Murray’s fascinating post match press conference in which he explains why he was disappointed in his performance and why he will continue to demand a lot of himself.

There’s also news of Marcus Willis’ retirement and the discovery of Juan Manuel Cerúndolo.

Then, we move on to answering more listener questions. In best-of-five set matches, should there be a games-won threshold that the losing player must reach after two sets to trigger five sets? Is there such a thing as a straight-sets classic? What is our best prediction of what Federer can achieve when he returns? And if we could choose any current players to face off on any court on any surface, who would we pick?

The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts. It is produced weekly year-round, and daily during the Grand Slam tournaments.

Well hello folks and welcome along to another tennis podcast. Our second of the week we're not

0:27.4

quite daily but we're pushing towards that daily throughout the year Mark that David

0:32.4

Law dreams of. David, hello. How you doing? All right. How are you? Yeah very well. Thank you.

0:39.0

Very well. Matt is back. Matt. Hey. It is an absolute treat to have you back. We missed you terribly.

0:46.8

We've had multiple rals this week and we're very pleased to have you back on the pod. How you doing?

0:52.8

Hello. Yes. Pleased to be back and I think what sealed it was last night's WhatsApp chat between

0:59.3

you two and I thought I need to reprise my peacekeeping role as a matter of urgency.

1:05.8

Yeah. There was a chat that ended with David just saying, right, I'm going to beg good night and

1:10.5

60 seconds later, a load of angry, passive, aggressive pole vaults appearing on our Twitter,

1:15.9

which was David expressing his anger at me in a very grown up way. Apparently David objects

1:24.4

in principle to the use of the IRL emoji. Yes, I do. Yes. I don't object to it being a thing.

1:33.4

I just don't want to be on the end of it. It seems like you do object to it being a thing.

1:37.2

You don't want it to be used. Not against me, no. Okay. We were muted, Catherine. Yeah. So there you go.

1:45.4

I dragged you down with me there. Listeners, you know, you can do what you like. No IRL

1:50.1

emojis in my direction, right? Or it's over. Yeah. He he he tells no lies. Folks, he really means

1:58.0

business where the IRL emoji is concerned. So that was the source of last night's aggro.

2:03.2

I don't think there's been any tennis aggro this week. There's been tennis, though. There's been

2:08.8

very, very good tennis so far this week. We're going to we're going to recap some of it before we

2:14.1

move on to more questions curated by this week's guest editor Simon Pierce. And we've got some
