The Islamic State has fallen out of the headlines but it's still a major force around the world.

Affiliates flourish across the Middle East and especially in Africa.

The spread of the group there has some analysts calling it the next jihadist battlefront.

Here to help us with all of this is Ryan O'Farell.

O'Farell is a senior analyst at the Bridgeway Foundation and a researcher focusing

on Islamist movements in East and Central Africa. He's also a contributing author of the book,

The Islamic State in Africa, The Emergence, Evolution, and Future of the Next jihadist Battlefront.

All right, so we just did another show recently that went kind of through a brief history of the war on Islamic State in Syria and Iraq and I thought

we won. Now you're telling me they're back in Africa. What is going on?

Yeah, so essentially what's what's happened is in a somewhat similar way to Al Qaeda and its various affiliates around the world.

Following the June, July 2014 announcement of the Caliphate with Abbaccor al-akdadi as the Caliph. A bunch of

insurgencies around the world, particularly in Africa, have pledged allegiance to

Islamic State and eight of them so far have been given by Islamic State's central leadership kind of

of provincial status or will I which is ostensibly on the same level as its provinces in Iraq and Syria.

So to the Islamic State, at least in its its narratives, these are part and parcel of the exact same organization as Iraq and Syria.
