Summary

Let's explore the Cimetiere du Calvaire, which is the oldest cemetery in Paris and surely the hardest to get inside.

How did we get in? Well, today's guest Eric Lejoindre - the Mayor of Montmartre - happens to have a key. Or at least, he knows the man with the key, father Alexandre Denis, who also features in this "on the go" episode.

All three of us visited the cemetery for the first time as part of this Earful Tower podcast episode - hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

Hello everybody, Oliver G here of the Earful Tower podcast, and I come with you today with a,

0:06.5

well, what I think is a pretty good episode. Season 13, episode two, and I'm taking you inside a place

0:12.9

you have almost certainly never been. But first, a bit of an explanation. When you have gone up

0:18.3

to Montmart in the past, I would wager that you went and had a look at the Sacri-Cur, the basilica, the big white building with three domes on the top. You know what I'm talking about, right at the top of the hill. But did you know that just to the, I guess it's to the west, to the west of it? There's a little tiny church called the Igliez Saint-Pierre de Montmartz. It's a 12th century Catholic church, one of, if not the

0:43.7

oldest churches in Paris. But that's not what fascinates me about this place. What fascinates me

0:49.3

is to the side of it is a tiny, tiny little cemetery, absolutely petite.

0:56.4

And you can see through the sort of bronze door there.

1:00.1

It's a really cool door, actually.

1:01.5

It's like figures of children sort of reaching out.

1:04.6

You can peek through a little corner.

1:06.3

But what I love the most about it is the sign to the side that you usually see at cemeteries

1:11.8

and parks in Paris that says open Monday to Friday, etc., etc.

1:14.6

This one just says opening hours November 1st.

1:19.0

I found this to be very curious indeed.

1:21.7

So I sent a direct message to the mayor of Montmartre, Eric Le Joindre, the mayor of the 18th, Aaron Desmond,

1:30.0

to be specific. He's been on the show before. I felt like I could best get away with solving this

1:36.2

mystery by messaging him. I said, hey, Eric, wondering if you can help me with a Montmartre mystery.

1:41.8

He said, sure, what's the mystery? I said, why is the Cemetery of Calvary?

1:49.8

Only open one day a year, but more importantly, can you get me inside? And he responded, essentially,

1:56.9

yes. He responded, yes. He said, not only that, he said it's an old cemetery.

2:02.0

There aren't any families coming. There's no space left. And the new priest in Saint-Pierre is a great guy.

2:07.4

I'm sure he'd be okay to open it for us on a private visit. He adds, he's very proud of his district.
