This is episode 1,756. Welcome to the Daily Meditation podcast. I'm Mary Meckley and I hope you are doing well today and thank you for joining us as we continue midweek through this week's important series.

We're exploring the topic of addiction, managing addiction, preventing it,

and having insight to help others who you know who may be struggling with addiction,

whether you have a full-blown substance addiction,

which could include an addiction to a substance such as opioids or alcohol

or any drugs, pornography, sex, or any other destructive type of habit or addiction.

Or you may have a mild addiction, such as maybe you are addicted to chocolate or exercising.

Whatever you do consistently impacts your brain.

And of course, there are some good things you can do to impact your brain in a positive way such as meditation.

You will be very glad to know that if you struggle with a serious or mild addiction or bad habit.

The part of your brain that meditation activates,

which is the prefrontal cortex,

is the same part of the brain that addiction inhibits.

So what happens when you become addicted? It is considered to be a mutual mechanism.

And I'm going to share with you from life science.com. How do we get addicted?

Everyone's path to addiction is different. Some people try a drug or a behavior because it's interesting or they're curious.

Others become addicted unknowingly, such as most opioid addicts

didn't plan on becoming addicted.

They were not substance abusers. Most of these people had an injury

or even their wisdom teeth pulled and were given opioids and became addicted. So you can become

addicted without even meaning to do so.

What happens with addiction is that the pleasure center of your brain is activated.
