Yes, Indiana, there's a story about a Roman training ground that has been on earth, and I believe it's maybe the first one found in the Mediterranean that is intact, is that true?

That is correct, and this was just discovered now, and it's still being fully excavated.

It's a place called Ligio, which is the name of the base, which was established during the reign of Hadrian, the Emperor Hadrian, who ruled to 138 of the C.E.

and served as the base for the 6th Legion Farada, which is also called the 6th Ironclad Legion, and in the 2nd and 3rd centuries, and in this camp they found a training ground, including a pit, which may have been used to take out clay originally, but they built into it a amphitheater where there was actual training and very brutal training according to the history.

And the only full scale 2nd century Roman base known in the whole Eastern Mediterranean, and they did use the ground penetrating equipment, and were able to identify the key parts of the camp, including the commander's residence and other things, which some of which still has to be excavated, but it's estimated that there were 5,000 Roman soldiers stationed at this base, and they got combat training and weapons training there.

And some of it was painted red, they believed, perhaps, to evoke the bloody exercises that took place inside. So it's a major development. I'm sure we'll become a big tourist attraction once it's opened to the public. It measures about 160 by 130 feet, so it's not huge, but it was clearly a very significant training camp for them.
