Summary

According to the ACLU, state lawmakers have introduced more than 500 bills targeting LGBTQ people in the 2026 legislative session. Those policies have economic consequences. Today, we explore what's at stake for states with anti-LGBTQ laws and how companies are navigating a climate unfriendly to DEI policies. But first, the dollar's recent strength is not about investors fleeing to safety, and hotter-than-hoped-for inflation means a higher chance of an interest rate hike.

What's behind the recent strength of the U.S. dollar?

0:05.0

From Marketplace in Washington, I'm Kimberly Adams.

0:08.1

The U.S. dollar hit a more than one year high this week on the U.S. Dollar Index,

0:12.9

ticker symbol DXY, if you were curious, which measures the greenback against a basket of foreign currencies.

0:19.4

The dollar's up about 5% since dipping to a recent

0:22.2

low in late January before the Iran war started, and it's been rising in fits and starts

1:07.4

And so that differential moves in favor of the U.S. and the dollar strengthens.

1:11.7

And here's what the recent dollar strengthening is not, says Joseph Ganyo at the Peterson

1:16.6

Institute for International Economics, investors fleeing to safety in troubled times.

1:22.3

This is not a safe haven's fight. The April 2025 Liberation Day tariffs coupled with all the

1:27.1

anti-foreign rhetoric rhetoric, has really

1:29.2

dented the safe haven attractiveness of the dollar.

1:33.6

Ganyo says what's going on here is just the heightened lure of U.S. interest rates and dollar-valued

1:38.9

assets, plus the underlying pull of our big, relatively strong economy.

1:43.6

The investors just love U.S. financial assets.
