Hi, welcome to life, death, and the space between podcast. I'm your host, Dr. Amy Robbins.

0:10.1

Today I'm going to be sharing a poem that was inspired by one of my podcast listeners.

0:16.0

If you haven't had a chance yet, we shared one of her stories last Monday. She talked about her connection

0:22.8

with an old boss of hers and the deep connection that they have had even since her boss has

0:28.8

passed away. But today I'm going to share with you the poem that she wrote that was inspired

0:34.5

by this podcast. In the absence of opposites by Susan Lipson.

0:42.0

In the absence of opposites, the light is unending.

0:47.2

0:58.4

1:22.9

1:33.9

1:50.3

are one and the same. Superlatives do not exist and the primitive social construct once known as

1:59.7

absence has been replaced by presence.

2:03.6

But here, where I am now, I experience my world through memorable juxtapositions,

2:11.6

through contrasts and comparisons, through paradoxically poignant moments. And here, now, I realize that this attempt to express my thoughts

2:24.3

in philosophically poetic lines might actually amuse me.

2:29.3

Someday, if, after my body's expiration, I am summoned by a reader, echoing my words,

2:39.3

someone who still marvels at these primitive imaginings about the absence of opposites.

2:48.2

Thank you so much, Susan.
