Well, today what I'm going to read is another chapter from my book

in Stitches. This is a book that I wrote several years ago and is a humorous memoir about becoming

a doctor. And this chapter starts with my first day of the third year of medical school.

So if you're not familiar with how medical school works, typically it starts with two years of basic science, now this is after undergrad, two years of basic

science where you do things like biochemistry, you learn gross anatomy, pharmacology, and then the third and fourth year is a medical school is when you're actually

in the hospital and you're learning from patients and you're part of the hospital team.

So this is day one of my third year of medical school.

Day one third year. My first to five two month clinical rotations in the hospital.

Internal Medicine. month clinical rotations in the hospital, internal medicine. Elevator at my back I turned down the corridor, walked like a gun slinger.

In reality, I inch forward in my short white coat that barely conceals my quivering chest. I feel like a

nervous waiter. In slow motion I bang into the nurses station and hold up my hand.
