Beer is a delightful beverage that gets its flavor from several sources, the most

prominent being malted barley, from cracker and white bread to toasty and ashy.

Malt is arguably the main reason so many beer styles exist today. The term

specialty malt is used to describe a subsect of malts that undergo differing treatments in order

to accentuate specific characteristics that are quite noticeable despite their relatively

low usage rates. You're listening to the Brulosophy podcast. I'm your host, Marshall Schott,

and today I am joined by contributor Will Lovell to chat about one such specialty malt that goes by the name, Victory Malt. Other than having a really, really cool name, because who doesn't want to have victory? I mean, that just sounds like the absolute best. You know, it is one of those things that is kind of like, you know, behind the scenes that, you know, who doesn't want toasty, nutty or biscuit flavors in the background of most of their beers? Because Lord knows I do. So I'm really excited to talk about Victory malt today. And, you know, maybe where it can and can't be used and how much impact it may or may not have. Yeah. You know, when I moved to All-Grain Brewing over 15 years ago, for whatever reason, I latched on to Victory malt. I'm assuming it was because something I heard from somebody that I trust, you know,

was talking about.

Anyway, I was happy with the results and just presumed that Victory malt had something

to do with, you know, my happiness with these beers.

So I just kept using it.

Just look at some of my recipes online. Tiny Bottom Pale Ale. There's a decent charge of victory malt, you know. Was it actually having that impact, though?
