According to data from our 2025 General Home Brewer Survey, 68% of respondents reported that they started off home brewing using malt extract in one form or another.

When asked what their current approach

to brewing is, less than 4% said they still use extract. That's quite a swing and would seem to

suggest that malt extracts are viewed as more of a beginner ingredient, likely because

of the mashing process, or at least, you know, to some people, that mashing process seems

convoluted. This is the brewlossophy podcast. I'm your host, Marshall Shot. Today, I am

joined by a contributor Will Lovell to share our experiences as well as some patron experiences,

brewing with malt extract. Yeah, I think like a lot of people, I got my start using malt extract,

and even today, I kind of use it as kind of a band-aid where I might

fail in gravity readings and some other things. And so whether use it for the whole fermentability

of your batch or you just use it to kind of make up for some fermentability that you may

have lost somewhere and lost efficiencies, I think it's still a great tool and something really

amazing that we have in our tool belts. I think it's still a great tool and something really amazing that

about it. Yeah, you know, for these experience episodes, we do our best to focus on our actual

experiences with whatever the topic at hand is, unlike our Bruce View series where we unabashedly share

our opinions on a specific topic,

well, I have a feeling this one's going to be a bit of a hybrid because for whatever reason,

malt extract is nearly impossible to talk about without getting at least somewhat opinionated

or making it seem to others that we're just sharing opinions.

So this is going to be kind of, like I said, kind of a hybrid. Also, like I mentioned earlier, we did make a point of asking our patrons for their experiences using malt extract. And again, you're going to notice that some of them kind of share some opinions along with that as well. But our main focus is on just the experiences in general, what we found works, what we found doesn't. So we're going to be getting into all of that. I look forward to it as well.
