Hi, I'm Edward Sree, and welcome to all things Catholic, where real faith meets real life.

I've ever wondered what it would have been like for Mary to receive her first Holy Communion?

0:20.9

The Blessed Virgin Mary receiving the Eucharist for the very first time, imagine what that

0:26.8

experience would have been for her, her unique experience of the Eucharist, because think about

0:32.0

who she is. She is the mother of Jesus. She carried in her womb for nine months, Jesus, the very body

0:39.7

and blood of Jesus in her womb, and then sometime after her son's death and resurrection,

0:47.6

sometime one of the apostles offers mass. We don't know where this would have taken place

0:52.4

when it would have been exactly, but just picture Mary at that liturgy approaching to receive

0:59.6

communion for the very first time. That same body and blood of Jesus, sacramentally being made

1:07.5

present to her, entering into her. What a profound mystery that would have been. Have you ever

1:12.9

thought about that? I've never thought about that. I did my doctoral studies in Rome and never

1:17.3

pondered this all through my graduate studies in theology. It wasn't until I read something from

1:21.9

one of my heroes that I want to share with you today. St. John Paul II. St. John Paul II, the great

1:27.8

mystic. He once contemplated that experience of Mary's first Holy Communion and wrote a little

1:34.0

reflection about this. I think about J.P. 2. He was such a Mary in Pope, had such a love and devotion

1:41.1

to our Lady, but he also was so devoted to the Eucharist. He puts these two devotions together,

1:48.4

these two mysteries together, and contemplates Mary's first Holy Communion. It's that reflection

1:54.4

of J.P. 2 that I want to share with you and unpack in this week's podcast. Welcome to All Things

so fun. She's all dressed up and ready to go. She's been in school. My next daughter,
