The topic this week was the multiple indictments against former President Donald Trump

and his attorneys for their alleged attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

Reason Zach Wisemuller and Liz Wolfe spoke with Ilya Soman, a law professor at

George Mason University, the B-Kenneth Simon Chair in Constitutional Studies at the Cato Institute,

and a writer at the Volic Conspiracy, which is a legal blog hosted at Reason.com.

Ilya has argued forcefully for the prosecution of Donald Trump, writing that the former

president's attempt to overturn the 2020 election well-deserves punishment from the

standpoint of both retribution and deterrence.

Zach, Liz, and Ilya examined the specifics of both the state and federal cases against Trump

reacted to concerns that the prosecutions are an attack on free speech or signs of a banana

republic, and they discussed what might be in store for the country if Trump were convicted

and barred from running for office.

Liz Wolfe. Hey, Liz. Happy to be here. Former President Donald Trump has four separate

indictments hanging over his head at this point. He also leads the

presidential Republican primary field by a long shot in the polls and is pulling neck and neck

with President Biden. Most recently, he pled not guilty in the case originating in Fulton County,

Georgia, which of course generated this now iconic mugshot.

It is safe to say now that whatever the outcome, it's going to be ugly.
