Hey, this is Michael Kaju and I want to share something that I just just learned that is pretty awesome. So I interviewed this guy named David Epstein,

who wrote the sports gene,

and he also wrote a new book called Range

Why Generalist Triumph in a Specialized World. And the thesis of the book is basically that for so long

we've been taught that early specialization or specializing in one thing in our

careers or in sports is the way to be most successful. People always bring up the Tiger Woods

story where he started when he was I don't know two years old and that's the only sport he played and now he's the greatest golfer of all time arguably

So people use examples like that to say that we should specialize early and we should focus on one thing for our

entire careers, whether that be in sports, business, etc.

And he really debunks that. What he shows is that if you look at the most successful people throughout a number of different industries, again business, sports, creative like arts and music, you'll find that the majority of them have a wide range of experiences.

And so his whole point is that we need more breadth and not depth.

We need to have more experiences.

We need to experiment with new things

as our interests continue to change.
