Hi, it's Andy here and welcome to Radio Headspace and to Thursday morning. I was chatting with

a friend a few days back and I think for a lot of people this past 12 months has been particularly

difficult in all kinds of different ways. But being the lockdowns and curfews and everything

else that have existed around the world have really challenged a lot of people and this friend

of mine was talking about his partner and just saying sort of, you know, how difficult he thought

that it had been on his partner and he said it's not that I even want her to be happy. I just don't

want her to be unhappy. I think very often whether we're thinking about others or whether we're

thinking about ourselves, there is a temptation to think that we need to add another layer of happiness.

Almost as though we don't have happiness. But I think the idea of seeing that the other way around

of perhaps letting go of unhappiness or letting go of suffering or struggle or however you might

sort of define it is actually a really liberating way of looking at life because there is a version

of life where you know we consider that perhaps happiness is inherent in the mind and it's not

something that we need to go and get or acquire or find that it's actually already here. But because

of all the stress we experience, the restlessness, the confusion, we don't necessarily see that or

feel it clearly or directly. But in being less unhappy in letting go of our unhappiness,

we start to experience it and that may not sound like a big difference between the two,
