A few people expected that.

But the decision by Hamas to agree to parts of Donald

Trump's plan for peace in Gaza has certainly raised hopes in the region and beyond. It was late on

Friday when the group released a statement in which it pledged to immediately enter into negotiations

for the release of all the remaining hostages under what it called the

necessary field conditions. It accepted an end to the war and agreed to hand over the

administration of Gaza to what it called a Palestinian body of independence, in other words

technocrats based on Palestinian national consensus and supported by Arab and Islamic backing.

However, Hamas remained silent on other parts of the 20-point Trump proposal,

notably its own demilitarisation and the offer of amnesty and safe passage to Hamas members

who decommission their weapons. Well, a few hours later, President Trump released this video message.

This is a big day. We'll see how it all turns out. We have to get the final word down in concrete.

Very importantly, I look forward to having the hostages come home to their parents and having some of the hostages,

unfortunately, you know the condition they're in, come home likewise to their parents,

because their parents wanted them just as much as though that young man or young woman

were alive. So I just want to let you know that this is a very special day,

maybe unprecedented in many ways. It is unprecedented. But thank you all. And thank you all to
