Welcome in the IC Daily for February the 4th.

A little bit later today recording because Greg Barnes dropped another solid, amazing, detail-oriented column on this Smith Center debate.

The ongoing debate, as we know now, Greg, you've been working hard on this information.

It has been a long, arduous process in covering it and reporting on it,

as has the debate amongst the factions of this.

Just in general, your take on where we are today, February 4th, 2026, it's hard to

believe. Yeah. And Tommy, this has been a three-year process from when conversations really

started up. And as we've laid out before, Bubba Cunningham had some plans drawn up back in 2013.

So UNC is known for a long time that something was going to have to be done with the Smith Center,

just with the way that it was aging.

And that conversation really kind of picked up in recent years.

And we covered some of the bits of this in December,

where we knew that there were some meetings that took place with the Rams Club

and with former players, and we were able to report on those stories.

But we knew there was some further background involved.

And as you see more of the organized push for, you know, either a Smith Center renovation

or South Campus option, as the committee for South Campus Arena has kind of gotten going and they've done a pretty good job and kind of getting a message out there and they've got 27,000 plus signatures on the petition.

It's become a talking point and we had known in December that an announcement would be coming likely in January,

and that now appears to be pushed back indefinitely with Lee Roberts saying at the Board of Trustees meeting a couple weeks ago

that they were going to create a couple of stakeholder committees, one with basketball folk, and the other with students, to kind of

make sure there's more feedback obtained.

And so we knew all these things were taking place, but we also knew there was kind of more
