Summary

Join Jameela and author, linguist & podcast host Amanda Montell (Sounds Like a Cult) for a conversation about the inner workings of our human brains: our anxieties, information overload and how we cannot manifest our way out of poverty, illness or the apocalypse. You’ll hear why we are obsessed with nostalgia, fandom and parasocial relationships and (thankfully!) why Amanda is hopeful for the future. She's been on this podcast before when she'd written a book called Cultish,

0:13.6

which is a fascinating book about the language used by cults and how we can see that same language

0:19.1

in advertising and media and social media and

0:22.3

with an amazing book called The Age of Magical O overthinking and it's all about overthinking and

0:50.6

neurosis and the chaos of media right now and the ways in which manifesting

0:57.0

can be abused and weaponized by people online, why we're so obsessed with celebrities, to the

1:03.2

point where we'll actually almost fight each other over it, talking about the importance

1:08.0

of nostalgia and how that can impact our mental health and how that can also

1:12.0

be weaponized against us, for example, with slogans like make America great again.

1:17.9

We talk all about cognitive bias and just all of these fascinating things that are going on

1:23.8

all around us, especially for those of us who spend a lot of time online, a lot of time

1:28.2

on social media. She's talking about the changes in our brains and the impact on our mental

1:33.8

health of digesting this much information all of the time that we're being waterboarded with

1:40.4

facts and stories and headlines constantly, and we are just simply not designed to take in this much information per day.

1:48.1

And so I think a lot of us have this feeling of like, am I okay?
