All of the things in the world, the temptations, everything that Satan has for us here, I mean, if you really want to get close to the heart of God, if you want to become a better citizen of the kingdom of God, not just in this world, and you really truly want to make an effect on people's lives, you want to be effective in people's lives, well, then you have to become more like Jesus Christ. You and I need to do that.

Today's message continues our study of First Peter, and we're glad you've joined us.

Pondering Jesus' perfect example of humble submission,

roll will encourage us to fully surrender to God, trusting him in seasons of suffering

and serving him in absolute devotion.

shepherd. He'll guide you in righteous paths and guard your soul in every trial. Now in 1 Peter

chapter 2, here's Roll Rees. He's going to speak to us in verse 21 and 22 and 23 about his own example of suffering.

Notice what he says, for to this you were called.

First of all, he wants us to understand our calling.

We were never called to have a joyous life thinking always about heaven.

That's not our call.

The call of God is a call to really count the cross.

Jesus himself said, if you want to follow me, then take up your what?

He says, first of all, take up your cross. Deny yourself,

take up your cross and follow me. He said that. And by doing that, the word to deny means

to forget about one self, interest, desires. It's not about you. it's about everybody else.

And if you really want to become my disciple, he says,

and if anyone wants to follow me, let him deny himself,

and then forget about yourself,
