promotion. This is a lot more prevalent today in the 21st century than it was say 25 30 years ago.

As companies delayer as structure becomes more fluid and flexible.

We find that a lot of mid-level managers

don't realize they have the ability to move things around.

And so they don't.

But then when senior people move things around they don't have it

all worked out things change and there are temporary situations and somebody's

frankly people don't know a lot of people today poo poo-poo the idea of a very rigid

structure and I would agree with them except they poo-poo it in part because

they want clarity on what their role is.

One of the downsides of poo-pooing a rigid structure is that rigid structures tend to have less opportunity.

So you end up with more opportunity if you allow the structure to be flexible, but what that means

is there's uncertainty and people don't know what to do.

And look, leaner organizations, managers don't have as much HR support.

So the administrative tasks that go with moving people around aren't done as quickly.

Plus, sometimes somebody moves somebody
