0:25.8 | Hypertensive retinopathy describes the damage to the small blood vessels in the retina that relates to |

0:35.4 | This can be the result of years of chronic hypertension, or it can develop |
0:40.4 | quickly in response to malignant hypertension, which is a severely high blood pressure. There are |

0:56.8 | the walls of the arterials become thickened and sclerosed and this causes increased reflection of |

1:10.7 | Arteriovenous nipping is where the arterials cause compression of the veins where the |
1:16.5 | veins and the arteries cross. And this again is due to sclerosis and hardening of the arterials |
1:22.8 | which squash down the veins which have softer vessel walls, |
1:29.0 | meaning they're more pliable. |
1:32.9 | So they get squashed where the two vessels cross. |
1:38.4 | Cotton wool spots are caused by ischemia and infarction in the retina, |
1:40.4 | causing damage to the nerve fibres. |
