0:00.0 | Hello and welcome to the Zero to Finals podcast. My name is Tom and in this episode I'm going to be |
0:09.6 | going through Cataracts. And you can find written notes on this topic at zero tofinals.com |
0:15.2 | slash cataracts or in the ophthalmology section of the zero to finals medicine book. |
0:21.3 | So let's get straight into it. |
0:23.3 | Cateracts occur where the lens in the eye becomes cloudy and opaque. |
0:28.9 | And this causes a reduced visual acuity by reducing the amount of light that can enter through |
0:34.9 | the eye and through the lens to get to the retina. |
0:38.2 | The job of the lens in the eye is to focus light that's coming into the eye onto the retina |
0:43.2 | at the back of the eye where that light is sensed and the brain is able to create an image |
0:49.1 | of what's seen on the eye. The lens is held in place by suspensory ligaments, which are attached to something |
0:55.6 | called the ciliary body, and the ciliary body contracts and relaxes in order to focus the lens, |
1:02.3 | but changes the shape of the lens in order to properly focus the light onto the retina. When the ciliary |
1:08.7 | body contracts, it actually releases tension on the |
1:12.4 | suspensory ligament, and this causes the lens to thicken. And when the ciliary body relaxes, |
1:18.5 | it increases the tension on the suspensory ligaments, and the lens becomes more narrow. The lens is |
1:24.6 | nourished by the surrounding fluid, and it doesn't have a blood supply. |
1:29.6 | And throughout life, the lens continues to grow and develop. |
1:33.7 | Most cataracts develop over years in the presence of several risk factors. |
1:38.8 | Congenital cataracts occur before birth and a screen for using the red reflex during the neonatal |
1:44.1 | examination. |
1:45.2 | So they usually picked up early. |
1:47.8 | But usually cataracts are associated with older age and several risk factors. |
