A filter is something that adjusts the equalization on an instrument or track to cut out or add specific frequencies to make

it sound very different than it might have sounded when it was originally recorded.

Some filters cut low frequencies, some filters cut high frequencies, and some filters actually move over time,

emphasizing high frequencies and then low frequencies, which adds a sense of motion to the

I recently bought this little all in one synth groove box songwriting thing.

It's called a Novation Circuit and it's pretty fun.

It's not the only one of these, Roland makes one, the

OP-1 is another well-known example. And it's generally intended to be auxiliary, like it's not

intended to be, you know, the kind of thing that you would use in a in the full studio to make music like I have a different thing that I use for that but as a kind of standalone just little thing covered in buttons that you can use to write music it's actually really cool and it's shaken up my creation

process quite a bit. One thing that this little groove box has on it is a big

filter knob just on the upper right and you can kind of just filter whatever

you're playing so everything that you're playing suddenly goes through a low-pass to high-pass filter

and it's actually really effective. It's the kind of thing you would use in more an electronic music

which isn't exactly the kind of music that I write but it's actually

really fun to just sort of play around with and to just have this knob on demand that can put a

filter on everything.
