Summary

At the beginning of April, I got beautiful new bicycle — a Specialized Roubaix. Since then, I've learned a helluva lot. From the must-carry essentials for every ride to the ins and outs of urban cycling, I can vouch that there's a huge learning curve when it comes to being a total newb. Good news: I've got you covered. For #HURDLEMOMENT this week, I'm giving you the download on what I've learned over the past 90 days. From the ins and outs of "clipping in" to the honest truth about padded bike shorts (spoiler: You need them). Plus, offering up some of my favorite gear picks. A huge thanks to my friends at Specialized for making this possible. About 900 miles in, I'm so grateful for my new hobby and the lessons it's teaching me.

It's fun to be a new cyclist. It's fun to try something new. It's fun to prove to yourself that you are

capable. You've just got to be willing to try.

Hey, hurdlers, Emily Abadi bringing you another installment of Hurtle moment from Hurtle. This week, I am chatting to you all about the lessons I learned in my first three months as an avid cyclist.

I've been getting tons of DMs as I've been posting more and more

0:39.4

bike-filled content on my Instagram. And so I'm bringing it to the feed to answer some of the

0:45.7

questions that I have been seeing on the regular. I thought about bringing some big guns,

0:50.5

so to speak, in for this episode, maybe a pro cyclist, someone that's been doing this for a

0:54.3

long time. But really, at the end of the day, I think sometimes the best thing for other

0:59.5

beginners is to hear someone who recently went through with themselves to explain it to them

1:04.2

in a way that makes sense. And it might not be the most technical. I am by no means a cycling

1:10.2

expert, but I hope that the insight that I can

1:12.4

bring you today is helpful and appreciated. Before we get into today's episode, I do want to explain

1:18.3

the circumstances around how I got into cycling. I mentioned a few months back dealing with

1:23.5

some hip wonkiness. And that ended up being what we think is diagnosed over Zoom, of course,

1:30.3

some pyriformis tendinosis. So to work on that, I was doing a ton of banded exercises and I was

1:37.4

also taking some time off of running, which during a pandemic, I am in my apartment alone.

1:43.6

I'm spending most of my time alone. I'm just

1:45.5

like, a little frustrated with my body and looking for an outlet. And I was having a conversation

1:52.3

with my girlfriend who works at Specialized. And she said to me, do you think now is the time for

1:58.0

you to finally get on a bike? And you know what? I had been hesitant for

2:02.7

some time. I had a bike previously in my apartment. I got a Cannondale in 2015 when I was

2:09.7

gearing up for the New York City triathlon. Since then, just because of the space available in this
