I'm Chris Hayes.

Tonight the world is still coming to grips with the devastation and the wake of the worst

mass murder of Jewish people since the Holocaust.

Today, three days after Hamas fighters launched a devastating surprise attack, the Israeli

government announced that it had finally taken back control of its border with Gaza.

The area where Hamas broke through a security barrier, often referred to as the Iron

Wall.

Israeli officials say they have discovered the bodies of about 1,500 Hamas militants

inside the country.

Over the course of the day, military forces said they continue to find and kill isolated

Hamas gunmen.

The death toll in Israel continues to rise to now over 1,000 people.

The vast majority of whom were civilians.

We are learning more horrific details from the small communities in southern Israel

along the border.

There were men, women and children were slaughtered in their homes.

In one, Kibbutz, a hundred bodies have been found.

In another nearby, an army major general described the scene as a massacre.

It's not a war.

It's not a battlefield.
