Today, Stuart Russell, one of the leading pioneers of artificial intelligence,

says we may see the arrival of superior alien intelligence,

but it won't be arriving in a spaceship.

We're in the process of building it.

Sometimes I get fixated on something new that I don't understand.

Right now, it's artificial intelligence.

I'm obsessed with it, like a dog with a bone,

because it feels like something we need to understand.

A few years ago, AI was just a cool idea that was starting to be useful,

improving language translation and recommendation algorithms.

In the last year, in the last few months,

it's become something else entirely.

It's writing code, novels, legal contracts,

and powering thousands upon thousands of new venture-back startups.

On the one hand, I find this AI explosion just really exciting.

It reminds me of a few other times in my lifetime

when transformative technologies have opened up new Vistas, new playgrounds,

offering potentially career-transforming opportunities.
