Summary

Welcome to the WHOOP Research Series, where we breakdown into the extensive, scientific research conducted by the WHOOP Performance Science team. On this week’s episode, WHOOP Global Head of Human Performance, Principal Scientist, Dr. Kristen Holmes sits down with WHOOP Senior Research Scientist Dr. Greg Grosicki to unpack the latest WHOOP Research Study on Heart Rate Variability Coefficient of Variation or HRV-CV. Using data from 21,000+ WHOOP members and 2 million nights of sleep, Dr. Holme...

We have stumbled upon a biomarker that's reflecting health. People who want to live longer and

0:06.0

healthier lives should be tracking heart rate variability, coefficient of variation, HRVCVCV.

0:11.0

The paper that was recently published that looks at this metric consisted of more than 21,000

0:17.0

WOOP members in roughly 2 million person days of data.

0:21.2

Looking at kind of this seven-day perspective and looking at the day-to-day variation in HRV was way more sensible.

0:28.5

So from a programming standpoint, this became a really important way to think about adaptation.

0:35.1

And I love the word adaptation or resilience being what exactly HRVCV is telling.

0:40.1

It's a resilience score. After this paper, they'll be integrating HRVCV as a way to really

0:45.3

risk stratify individuals by their health status. Using these data to give insight into health span,

0:50.8

giving us trajectories as to how quickly we're aging, our metabolic health,

0:55.7

insulin insensitivity, and there's no better metric to pick that up than the HRVCV.

1:00.6

There's a lot of compelling data here from the sports science literature to tell us that this is

1:05.0

a metric worth chasing, but many people fall into this trap of...

1:15.0

This is becoming a regular occurrence, Dr. Gregorsicki.

1:17.0

Always a pleasure, Dr. Kristen Holmes.

1:19.6

So I feel like I... You know, I don't want to, like, overinflate our research, but we've got another groundbreaking one to talk about today.

1:24.3

Always fun.

1:25.3

When you have the data that we do.

1:26.8

I know, I know. So we're going to talk about hearty variability fun when you have the data that we do. I know, I know.

1:27.8

So we're going to talk about hearty variability coefficient of variation.

1:31.6

We have published a really cool paper that looks at this metric.

1:36.8

So we're going to talk about that.
