Summary

EP. 258: Get Strong with Me Inside my NEW Strength Vault: https://www.drtyna.com/offers/G33fSdvSIn this episode, I’m breaking down one of the most frustrating conversations happening in women’s health right now, the claim that estrogen and hormone replacement therapy don’t support muscle mass. The reality is more nuanced. I walk through what the current research actually shows, where it’s strong, where it’s inconsistent, and how estrogen interacts with skeletal muscle at a physiological level. We’re talking about estrogen receptors in muscle, mitochondrial function, anabolic signaling, insulin resistance, and why outcomes around muscle are often context-dependent. I also share what I’ve observed clinically after decades of working in a musculoskeletal setting, and how factors like metabolic health, training status, and overall tissue quality may influence how hormone therapy plays out in the real world. This episode isn’t about claiming HRT builds muscle. It’s about understanding how estrogen affects muscle biology, and why strength training remains a non-negotiable piece of the equation. Topics Discussed: → Estrogen and muscle growth → HRT and menopause fitness → Strength training for women over 40 → Insulin resistance and muscle health → Hormones and metabolic health Sponsored By: → Ogee | Thanks to today’s sponsor, Ogee: A higher standard for beauty. On this episode of the Dr. Tina show, I'm going to be talking to you about estrogen, hormone

0:12.2

replacement therapy, and muscle. I'm going to tell you everything you need to know from the latest

0:17.2

data that I pulled up. The reason I'm doing this episode is because for some reason out there,

0:23.3

there is a group of PhD scientists, some young women, some older men,

0:29.1

who really want to claim that estrogen replacement therapy and hormone replacement therapy

0:34.6

does not help muscle mass.

0:36.7

And that's just plain wrong.

0:38.0

So we're going to get into it.

0:39.4

Okay, with all due respect, the folks I'm talking about are brilliant people.

0:43.3

All right?

0:44.1

They're really hung up on the data and they're really doubling down on this concept

0:50.6

that estrogen in particular does not help muscle mass. Why? I do not know. But

0:57.6

because they do not have a direct causative study, they're claiming this. And that's where I think

1:04.8

everybody's missing the mark. We don't need a direct causative study to look at physiology and backtrack and decide how this piece is together ultimately to influence positive impacts on muscle mass.

1:20.9

Estrogen does help muscle mass, and I'm going to tell you why.

1:24.6

So first off, this post came in, I saw it, I don't know, a couple days ago,

1:30.8

and it basically was saying that menopause hormone therapy isn't a panacea. And they listed off

1:39.4

several symptoms that, you know, it may help with, but it helps with symptoms and not specifically the condition

1:49.3

itself. And again, we don't have a direct causative study showing that you give somebody

1:55.9

estrogen and muscle mass is significantly improved. But we have plenty of studies that are very recent that I was pretty, you know, easy,

2:06.4

they were pretty easy to dig up, that show estrogen does indeed impact muscle mass.
