Summary

Most people think the biggest lies come from the media, politicians, or social media. They don’t. AJ sits down with psychologist and author Owen Fitzpatrick to explore the hidden force shaping our decisions every day: inner propaganda. Drawing from decades of research on beliefs, persuasion, cults, identity, and psychology, Owen explains why smart people are often the easiest to fool, how emotions shape our reality, and why the stories we tell ourselves can either limit us or transform us. This conversation explores self-deception, identity, influence, emotional intelligence, and the practical tools you can use to challenge your assumptions, update your beliefs, and become more resilient in a world full of competing narratives. There's a great technique known as emotional granularity. And what it means is it means identifying

0:06.0

what specifically am I feeling right now. You go to the granular of the emotion and you try to

0:10.7

describe it in as vivid, clear, specific detail as possible. And once you do that, it reduces the

0:16.8

significance of the impact of it. Actually, neurologically, it reduces the amount of the amygdala involved, but it means that

0:22.8

you're much less likely to be affected by that emotion simply by labeling it specifically.

0:28.1

The more educated you become about your feelings, the more that you can make better decisions. All right, let's kick off today's show.

Owen spent 25 years studying beliefs after one question stopped him from taking his own life as a teenager.

Today, Owen shares why the mirror lies more than the screen, how emotional granularity diffuses decisions, the real

reason cults recruit the lonely, and why how you feel talking beats what you say. Welcome to

the show, Owen. It's great to have you.

the things that drove me to psychology in the first place is when I was a teenager. I was suicidal. I was struggling a lot with depression. And so one of the things that drove me to psychology in the first place is when I was a teenager,

1:28.0

I was suicidal.

1:29.0

I was struggling a lot with depression.

1:31.0

And so there was a moment or an experience I had where I was writing a suicide note.

1:36.3

And then for wherever it came from, I still don't know, a question.

1:40.4

I wrote down a question which changed the way in which I thought about everything.

1:44.0

So it was like a

before and after moment, just one question. And it wasn't like I turned around and said, oh, I'm happy now,

Grace. My life was still miserable. I still, you know, struggled a lot mentally. But it was the last time
