prison isn't supposed to be easy, but it could be more humane for the incarcerated and the staff.

To that end, Washington State is looking to Norway's prison system as a hopeful example of what

might be achievable here. In a minute, Seattle Times reporter Nina Shapiro will tell us what staff

learned and how some of it's being implemented at Washington State prisons. But first, let's get you caught up.

According to the Vera Institute of Justice, the life expectancy of correctional officers in America is 16 years shorter than the national average.

The dehumanizing experience of American prisons takes a toll on both the employees and the incarcerated. So back in 2020, the Washington State Department of Corrections partnered with a

California program called Amend to bring a public health focus to Washington's prisons. The reform

has made several uneven strides since then, but one

highlight is trips to Norway, a country known for its prison reform efforts. So far, 10 trips to

Norway have introduced more than 100 prison staffers to the Norwegian prison system firsthand.
