Summary

No one likes experiencing uncomfortable thoughts and feelings, like anxiety. However, the more we fight our internal experience, the more likely it is to fight back. Rather than resisting the internal experience we don't want to feel, by urning towards them and even welcoming them - it can have a powerful positive effect, as Dr. guy explains.

Working with me 1-1

"I have to say that in the days following our call I felt as though there had been a profound shift. The days that followed were some of the best days I have had in many years as there seemed to be so much more space between me any my thoughts." - Henry

“Each session with Simon has been enjoyable and enlightening in equal measure.Through our conversations I have learnt a lot not only about non-duality and Simon’s use of his own experiences are really helpful in grasping the ideas behind it all. After each chat I really feel like my ‘cup has been filled" - Jack

"What Simon did so beautifully and directly, was put back into my hands the ability to do some self-inquiry. I did the inquiry and freedom was revealed. I would whole heartedly recommend you speak with Simon as he brings a lightness, fun and focus." - Kate

feelings. Now that's something that a lot of us don't want to do. I know that's certainly been true of me.

0:29.3

However, the more we resist uncomfortable thoughts and feelings, the more they persist. So paradoxically,

0:35.5

if we can welcome them and accept them, that's when they can start

0:39.9

to dissipate and unravel. This conversation is with Dr. Guy Meadow. So it's about insomnia

0:46.4

specifically, which I really badly struggled with in my 20s until I had a conversation with Guy

0:53.3

all about acceptance and commitment therapy,

0:55.5

which has such a big impact on my life, generally speaking.

0:58.9

Even though we're talking about sleep in this episode, this approach can be applied to any

1:03.0

situation in which you feel uncomfortable and perhaps anxious thoughts and feelings.

1:11.7

The basis of your work is acceptance and commitment therapy.

1:16.3

That's exactly it.

1:17.2

So do you want to, let's get into the nuts and bolts of it then?

1:19.6

Yeah.

1:20.0

So we've, I use traditional cognitive behaviour therapy for insomnia for a number of years.

1:26.6

And it is effective, but it wasn't as

1:28.9

effective as I wanted it to be or my clients wanted it to be. And I began to, you know, bring in

1:36.0

more acceptance-based principles. And one of those being mindfulness. And, you know, this is,

1:41.8

we're talking about a time when, you know, mindfulness, as you sort of mentioned in the beginning, mindfulness was not wildly known, you know that this is we're talking about a time when you know mindfulness as you

1:44.9

sort of mentioned in the beginning mindfulness was not wildly known you know back then there were only a few

1:49.2

spots in london which you could could do could do it and most of it was connected to sort of

1:53.0

you know a Buddhist center or something like that you know but so acceptance and commitment
