SHOW DESCRIPTION: In this podcast I talk about the importance of teaching your child about boundaries. This is part 1 of a 2-part series on parenting, boundaries, and mental health.
From the moment children are born, they are tied to their environment and the people within their environment. They are born into a community which they both shape and are shaped by.
A child’s identity is closely tied to their community – their family, friends, and other acquaintances. Children develop a sense of who they are in relation to who they are with. This has both a huge potential for growth and connection and a huge potential for harm, which is why teaching your child how to have healthy relationships from a young age is so important for their mental and physical wellbeing.

0:10.0 | Well, in today's podcast, I am so excited to talk more about how to help your children |
0:16.0 | manage their mental health. |
0:21.3 | As we know, there's a pandemic in mental health issues. We know that mental health challenges |
0:25.5 | are on the rise, there's an increase in suicides. It's really scary and it's frightening, |
0:31.3 | but it doesn't have to be. It's a real problem, but there is a way of managing it. |
0:36.4 | And as I mentioned in my previous podcast, and I encourage you to listen to all the |
0:39.9 | series that I'm doing on how to help children manage their mental health, as I mentioned |
0:45.1 | in my previous podcast, a large part of the reason why we have this increase is, sure, |
0:51.0 | huge technology and the changes that really shifted around 2010 in terms of social media |
0:55.6 | and so on. But the other big factor that's not spoken about enough and that I speak |
0:59.6 | about extensively is the fact that the last 30, 40 years, things, the way that we manage |
1:04.6 | our mind and the way that we help our children manage their mind has changed radically from |
1:10.6 | a contextualised managing of helping a child understand why they're going, what they're |
1:15.4 | going through, giving them the tools to talk about their story and what's going on and |
1:20.3 | helping them process it. That's been kind of pushed aside in favour of if your child has |
1:26.4 | any of these anxiety or depression or behavioral problems or learning problems that's like |
1:31.0 | off to the doctor, look at the symptoms, diagnose, as though there's a brain disease label |
1:37.8 | and very often standard of care is medicated. And this has made things worse. The research |
1:45.8 | is there, it's out, it just worked, things would have got better. It hasn't worked because |
1:51.4 | things have got worse. We can't reduce ourselves down to a brain because we are very complex |
1:57.5 | humans, our children are complex humans in a complex world and we cannot separate out |
