Welcome to Raising Good Humans. I'm Dr. Aliza and today is a special episode. I am talking with

0:13.9

my friend Jennifer Garner. We decided that we wanted to have a conversation about the Holocaust

0:22.6

and talking about atrocities like the Holocaust with children in the developmentally

0:29.1

appropriate way and you can translate the information depending on your child's age and temperament

0:36.5

from younger to older. I say temperament which I didn't get into in this episode but sometimes

0:42.6

your child is age-appropriate for conversation but they are not ready for it and only you can know

0:49.6

what your child can handle. Not to say that you should never have difficult conversations with

0:56.7

kids who are really sensitive and empathetic but you just might want to think about that before

1:01.9

you engage in really difficult conversations to make sure that you have space and time

1:07.3

for their response and then we talked about an unusual spin on our conversations which is

1:14.8

my grandparents experience as Holocaust survivors and the reason that we did that is because

1:20.9

today is Yamhashoa which is the day that we honor the six million Jewish lives lost in the Holocaust.

1:32.4

There's a lot to say about that. I put in the show notes web links for books and information

1:40.6

but today we didn't go too far into the details of Yamhashoa but enough so that you know

1:50.4

telling these stories and honoring the past and learning from the past is not as off-topic as it

1:57.7

seems for raising good humans. It's what we need to do and so the first part of this is really about

2:05.2

getting through these conversations with children and why we're having these conversations and what

2:10.0

ages to have them and some supporting materials and the second part is really just a personal

2:15.2

conversation that we decided to have in front of everybody else to share my family's history

2:21.7

and it's so meaningful to me to be able to have a space where I can share this story. My

2:28.5

grandfather can hear this. He's still alive so it really is even more meaningful
