It's your first time getting into worm composting this season.

You might be wondering how to start a compost bin and there's actually a lot of different

ways from a construction standpoint.

You can do it with a tote, you can do it with a worm bag.

There's all sorts of different ways.

There are a couple of best practices for how to get the worms going.

So Steve Churchill's back on the show, founder of the Urban Worm Company.

I guess Steve, why don't we start off with that container?

If we want to do that basic bucket method, what are we looking at?

Yeah, the great thing about worm composting does not have to be expensive to start and most people

can start it with any container that they've already got in their house.

I joke that you could do it on the kitchen floor if your wife or husband or roommate said

that you could, but let's just assume that you're going to do this like normal people do it in a

doing it in a tote or in a bucket.

All you need is that container which effectively just encapsulates the worm composting process.

What you're going to want to do with that container is you're going to want to drill the sides,

the upper sides of that where the worm compost is not going to reside, but that air gap between

the top of the worm compost and the lid.

In a rubber-made tote, that might be the top six inches, six to eight inches,

the five gallon bucket. You're going to want that for ventilation.

One thing that you can do is that one thing a lot of people do, and I don't think they

necessarily should, but it happens a lot, is that their worm compost is going to be wet
