Leviathan. How to spot a Leviathan, the many-headed marine spirit. What is Leviathan? Is this just something that deliverance ministries come up with? Or is it actually in the Bible?

And what are some characteristics of a Leviathan?

Let's start from the beginning. We need to understand the background to Leviathan.

Pagan gods and the cosmic battle against chaos. Yes, you heard me right.

Ancient people were afraid of chaos. Their gods battled the forces of chaos,

kind of like American cartoon superheroes.

And these gods brought order to the universe.

In ancient Near Eastern cosmology,

the sea was often associated with chaos, darkness, and danger.

Bail fought the god of the sea, Yom, and Bail's victory symbolized him bringing order to chaos in the universe.

Now, when it comes to Hebrew supernatural worldview, the sea often referred to as YUM symbolized the chaos and the forces of disorder.

If we look at Genesis 1-1, it says, in the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

The earth was without form, verse 2, and the void and the darkness was on the face of the deep.

And the spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

And so we see in verse 3, God said let there be light and there was light.

So we meet waters before water appears in the order of creation.

We meet the light before he created the sun, the moon and the stars.

So in Genesis 1, verse 2, we see there's a deep darkness, there is abyss, there's raging out of control, see.

Interesting. You go to the end of the Bible, Revelation 21, 1, you see there is no more sea.
