Summary

Have you ever considered that how to set yourself apart as a speaker may be to embrace what is uniquely you? Maybe it's an accent you have or your above-average height, whatever it is it may be the key to standing out in our crowded speaking marketplace.

On today's edition of The Speaker Lab, I've got a guest who has used her unique voice and stature to create a thriving speaking career. Neen James stands a petite 4'10 (and 1/2!) and hails from Australia. With her tiny height and self-professed Disney princess voice she was told by many no one was going to book her or take her seriously as speaker.

But with her undeniable sass, drive and determination she has proven them wrong! Listen to this episode to hear how she accidentally became a professional speaker, how she pivoted from productivity to her current topic today, and how's she built her reputation in the corporate business world. You'll hear that and more on episode 124 of The Speaker Lab.

THE FINER DETAILS OF THIS SHOW:

  • What's the trick to having a successful speaking career?
  • What are "telecoffees" and how did she build her business with them?
  • Why you should audit the things you are good at.
  • What are the things that make us "rememorable"?
  • Why speakers have to establish credibility and do it quickly.
  • How she pivoted from productivity to attention.
  • Can you be a jack of all trades and be successful as a speaker?
  • How can you become a great resource and trusted advisor to your clients?
  • And so much more!

Hey, what if I told you that there was a single marketing asset that you could use to book tens of thousands of dollars in paid speaking gigs before you even have a website?

0:10.2

Well, that tool exists.

0:11.4

And Dan Irvin, one of the speakers on our team, used it to book over $36,000 in speaking gigs without a fancy website or any social media presence.

0:19.6

Even better, we're going to teach you exactly how

0:22.1

to create that tool for your speaking business in under an hour. For a limited time, we're going to

0:26.9

be offering a free live training on how to build and use this marketing asset to start booking

you being a part of the show. Hey, we've got a great guest for you today. This is a speaker wizard that's been in the business for many years and has definitely learned a lot. It has a lot to share with us today. And she's the sassy as all get out. So I think you're really going to enjoy this guest on today's show. Before we get to that, again, let me remind you. Every single week, we do a free live training teaching you all about how to find and book paid speaking engagements. So we walk through

1:32.3

that system in depth on the webinar on this training and walk through exactly what you need to do

1:37.3

wherever you're at in your speaking journeys on how to find and book paid speaking engagement.

1:41.6

So again, you definitely want to register for that over at free speakerworkshop.com, and we look forward to hanging out with you real soon.

1:47.8

All right. So today we're talking with my friend Neen James, N-E-E-N-James from Neenjames.com.

1:54.7

Neen is just a firecracker of a human and a firecracker of a speaker for sure.

1:58.9

So this is a great conversation where we talk about being comfortable in your own skin, using what may be perceived as a weakness by others as strengths, meaning that you'll hear in a second, Nene has kind of a unique what she would call a cartoonish voice. She's four foot 10 and a half, I believe is what she said, four foot 10 and half. So she's a little short and stature there, but just again, a firecracker on stage. And so we talk about, you know, when you're getting started, if you feel like maybe, like in her case, she felt like, you know, am I, is my voice sounds different or am I not tall enough to be a speaker? You know, do I not have what it takes? we talked that through. Let's talk about how to set yourself apart as the speaker in a crowded, busy market.

2:36.0

So as she was kind of figuring out what she wanted to speak about, it was kind of a popular topic. So how do you kind of work around that situation? We talk about how she discovered what to speak about, made the pivot actually to a slightly different topic as well. We talk about the women's market and converts and industries,

2:51.6

the pros and cons and that space. I have a lot of female speakers that reach out and say, hey, I want to speak to other women. I want to talk in the women's market and industry. Is there even an industry for that? And so Neen gives some great insights on that. Talk about the international speaking market. Neen's done a lot of speaking internationally. She's from Australia. She lives in the U.S. now. So she has a couple of insights to share there.

3:10.1

Plus, she's been actively involved in the NSA, the National Speakers Association. So she gives some thoughts on the NSA as well. So just a great, wide-ranging conversation. I think you're really going to enjoy this. Neen's just a lot of fun, just a great gal. And so let's get right into it. Here's my conversation with my friend

3:24.6

Neen James. Enjoy. What is up, my friend? Graham Baldwin here. Welcome back to the Speaker
