What's going on everyone? Welcome back to another episode of the Epic Gardening

podcast. My name is Kevin. Today I'm taking a question from Charmaine. So hey Charmaine

0:10.3

if you're listening. Her question is how do I get rid of deep-rooted

0:15.0

weeds especially because I have pets and I want to make sure that I do it safely. So

0:20.0

this is a great question. If you have not already listened to my episode on five simple

0:25.9

ways to remove weeds without herbicides, then definitely go to the podcast page on my website.

0:31.2

That's Epic Gardening. slash podcast and go check that out

0:35.0

but I'm going to tackle this question as well so it's a pretty simple process

0:39.2

really the reason you're going to want to remove the roots of a weed is because a lot of weeds can

0:45.2

regrow even from a small bit of root. That is what makes them weeds. They're

0:49.6

extremely hardy and adaptable and they have some capabilities that other plants just

0:54.5

don't. There's a lot of other plants that if you were to remove their entire

0:58.1

stem they will die. They just won't regrow back from that. So here we go. The first thing you're going to want to do is try to do it when your

1:07.0

soil is moist or wet. It's way easier to ensure that you get everything out when you have a heavy rain or a heavy water.

1:15.6

So if you're in a rainy area, sometimes you can just go out when it's actually pouring rain

1:21.3

and start pulling leaves and pulling weeds out of the ground.

1:24.8

And then just check and make sure that you actually have the entire tap root.

1:29.4

And the way that you can do that is if you think about a carrot, you can see when the carrot just ends completely it

1:34.8

becomes very very very thin and then there's often a sort of wispy bit of root that is extending

1:40.9

off of the bottom of the carrot, that would be a completely pulled out taproot type situation.

1:47.0

So you're going to want to do that with your rooted weeds as well.

1:50.0

So my best tip, honestly, is to moisten the soil. So hopefully you can use rain instead of just pouring water on the soil, but if you must get the weeds out by pouring water then so be it. That's what you have to do.
