Summary

The architecture of a Catholic church is not random, it's meant to share the story of our faith. In this special episode, Dr. Sri joins us from the Basilica of St. John Lateran in Rome to teach us how to read a Catholic church. Using this historic Basilica as an example, Dr. Sri helps us understand and appreciate the rich theological meaning behind its architecture.

Snippet from the Show

"Catholic churches are theology in stone, mosaics, and glass. The very architecture of our churches is meant to share a story."

What I want you to do, though, is I want you to imagine being a Roman citizen,

1:10.0

and you grew up in a pagan culture, but you came across some Christians,

1:15.0

and you're removed by their witness, and you're thinking about this Christian thing,

1:20.0

and thinking about becoming a Christian. And so you go through the early process of what we call today, R-C-I-A,

1:27.0

and you're going through this intense preparation, spiritual preparation, moral preparation,

1:32.0

catacetical preparation. And then finally, on the climactic day, you come to this very building.

1:39.0

You come right here to be baptized. You come to the Bishop of Rome. The Pope is going to baptize you in this building.

1:46.0

And what I want to share with you is what happened inside here, because everything you did in this building,

1:52.0

all of the rituals, the words, the symbols were there to really wake you up to realize how profound a moment this was,

2:00.0

and it was all there to tell you about the profound transformation really taking place inside of you,

2:06.0

that you were being changed in this moment. So what happened when you came in to this baptistry?

First thing you would do is you would face West. You would face West, and you would say a prayer,
