What is up epic gardeners? Today we are talking about a propagation

technique that you may not have tried before. Sounds a little complex, sounds a

little magical, it's called air layering.

What the heck is air layering?

When we think about propagating plants, most of the time we think about taking cuttings,

maybe dividing a clump, or maybe just planting from seeds.

But what if I told you there's another way?

Air layering.

It's one of the more intricate propagation methods because you're propagating a plant while it's actually still attached to the parent plant.

You're not taking a cutting off until later.

So if that sounds confusing, don't worry, it's not that hard to do.

I'm going to go over what air layering is,

plants that respond well to air layering and then a quick step-by-step

So I think, if my research is correct, it dates back to ancient China and Japan. So that's where air layering was really popular because of bonsai. It's not the most common propagation technique even to this day,

mostly because it takes a while to actually successfully

have an air layer to plant propagate.

But you might ask, okay, well, if it's not popular and it takes a while, why would anyone ever do it? This makes no sense. Why don't I just grow from seed? Well, that makes sense. Seeds are simpler to start, but they take a lot longer

to reach maturity, and they're not genetically identical.

So if you do want an exact copy of a particular plant

that has qualities that you like, well, you need to propagate it off of it, you need to propagate off of it directly.
