Summary

In this episode of Catholicism for Catholics, Alison Oertle unpacks the Mass, the Divine Liturgy.

What is it? How does one participate fully? And why does it matter?

With so many ways to pray and worship as Catholics (personal prayer, small groups, times of praise) the Church calls the liturgy the primary act of worship. It is more than attending; it is coming together as the Body of Christ, joining with the worldwide Church, and even the angels and saints in heaven, to praise and receive God.

This episode explores:

  • The meaning of the word liturgy (“the work of the people”)

  • How to participate consciously, actively, and fully

  • The Scripture, prayers, and sacraments that guide the Mass

  • How the Eucharist connects participants to Christ’s sacrifice and nourishes daily life

  • Ways to enter into the heavenly reality that the Mass reveals

The Mass is not just a routine; it is a real encounter with Jesus, a chance to set aside distractions, receive His grace, and leave sent to live as His light in the world.

The word liturgy from the Greek means the work of the people, that we come together with one mind, with one heart to give God praise, to receive

him who reveals himself to us. The church calls us to full, active, conscious participation.

That's a lot. It's really pointing to the fact that we are not mere

1:13.6

spectators. It's not enough to just show up and to sit in the pew. There is work to be done.

1:21.6

There is goodness to be found, to be received, but that we need to participate, to show up, to begin to have all that God

wants to offer for our sake and for the sake of the world. So there's something much bigger going on

1:39.0

that what we could possibly see with our eyes, comprehend with our senses, begin to even dream or imagine.

They're more gathered together for the divine liturgy than ourselves than even the people in

the pews next to us in this parish local church. There's a participation of the worldwide church throughout every city, state,

continent in the world of the church gathered together. But even more so, there's the participation

2:11.1

of the heavenly liturgy, of all the angels and saints who are gathered around his throne, crying out, holy, holy,

2:20.9

is this Lord God Almighty who has given himself to his people, who has revealed himself and continues

to reveal himself. With all of that, it's hard to imagine that we could possibly miss it.

And yet, speaking for myself, I know so often I do.

It's so easy to be distracted, to be just used to the routine of the glory that's available to us,

2:50.7

to be trying to wrangle the toddler,

2:53.1

to be frustrated with those who are glaring at me, maybe unkind in the seats.
