pressure, educational and social, perhaps a mother's first duty to her children is to secure for

them a quiet growing time, a full six years of passive, receptive life. The waking part of it spent, for the

most part, out in the fresh air. Home Education, page 43. Charlotte recognized the pressure that we

all feel and that society puts on us, to help our children excel educationally

and socially. But amid that pressure, and even in spite of that pressure, she encouraged

us to stand firm and to give our preschool children what they really need, a quiet growing time, a full six

years of passive receptive life.
