Summary

The internet was one of the greatest inventions in human history. It shifted society from being geographically fragmented to globally connected. It led to the advent of social media and platform businesses. It made the supply of connection and knowledge effectively endless. But it also created a whole new set of challenges from social comparison to employee anxiety and procrastination. In this first of this two part series, I talk about how we can have the internet work for us vs. against us. What's up everyone? This is Alex Lieberman, co-founder and executive chairman of Morning Brew.

0:05.6

Welcome back to Founders Journal, my personal audio diary, where I give you the business builder,

0:11.4

the tools you need to think better in order to build better, whether that's building a business,

0:16.4

a team, or a new product. So today, and next episode, I am talking about how to make social media

0:23.6

work for us rather than against us. This first of the two episodes will be about how social

0:29.8

can work for us as people and professionals. And the second episode, next episode, will be about

0:36.2

how social media can work for us as founders and managers. Let's hop into it.

five separate articles that cover topics ranging from a VIP account program called X Checker,

1:14.0

that basically included celebrities and politicians and had their posts effectively

1:19.9

avoid the algorithms of the platform for actual individuals to say go or no go on some of their

1:26.4

posts, all the way to the negative effects of Instagram on teens to Facebook being used for

1:32.9

drug and human trafficking over the years. I want to talk about one example that stood out to me

1:38.8

from reading these files before hopping into how we should think about making social media work for

1:44.6

us versus against us. So the second article of the Facebook files was focused on Instagram and

1:51.0

specifically how Instagram has become a toxic place for many people mentally, but specifically

1:58.7

the article was focused on teenage girls. And there was research that was run and two stats I

2:04.3

want to throw out to you. The first is that 32% of team girls said that when they felt bad about

2:11.6

their bodies, Instagram made them feel worse. The second stat is that 40% of Instagram users who

2:18.1

reported feeling unattractive said the feeling of being unattractive began on the app. And this made
