Summary

Speaking from Luke 1:26–38, Dr. Jim Denison discusses the courage of Mary after she was told she would be the mother of Jesus. That story is why March 25, the day on which this episode was recorded, was once considered New Year's Day and is now celebrated as Annunciation Day in many Christian traditions. But why does that matter today? Because, when you become a Christian and Christ lives within you, you have the power of Jesus to fulfill the purpose of Jesus so that you might be a partner with Jesus.

Hi, I'm Jim Denison with Denison Forum, and I wanted to talk with you today in order

0:09.1

to wish you a Happy New Year.

0:11.3

Now, you might think that's kind of odd.

0:13.0

Today happens to be March 25th, even though, as I'll explain in just a moment, this conversation

0:17.8

is relevant every day, not just March 25th, but it happens to be that day.

0:21.6

So why am I wishing you a happy new year today? Well, if you were a Christian living in Europe

0:27.4

a thousand years ago or so, you wouldn't be asking that question because for them March 25th

0:32.8

was the first day of the new year. So why is that the case? How did that happen? Well, you're familiar

0:39.4

with the idea that you would start dating history around the birth of Jesus. We're familiar with

0:44.2

BC being before Christ and AD, meaning anodominy the year of our Lord. And so history starts

0:50.8

with the birth of Christ. Well, in the theory that Jesus was born on December 25th, which is more the tradition than actually probably historical, but nonetheless, if he's born on December 25th, nine months earlier, he would have been conceived on March 25th.

1:05.0

And so March 25th would be the day when he actually would enter the human race, when he would actually enter humanity.

1:12.2

That's when the incarnation would begin.

1:14.9

So if history starts with the birth of Jesus, then the calendar should start with the conception of Jesus.

1:20.7

And that would be March 25th, which is why for a lot of Christians, for a lot of history, March 25th would be the new year. And I'm not talking about

1:29.5

all of this so much because of that, but because of what actually happened on the day whenever it

1:34.5

was that Jesus actually entered the human race through his conception with Mary. Let me read to you

1:40.1

the text in Luke chapter one that tells that story. Then I want to talk with you about the

1:44.2

courage of Mary and how that courage relates to us in our post-Christian, some would say even

1:50.2

anti-Christian culture today. So here's the text. It's in Luke chapter one beginning at verse 26.

1:56.5

In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph of the house of David.

2:07.1

The virgin's name was Mary.
