0:13.4	The seasons of Advent and Lent are great gifts that the church give us through our sacrifices
0:19.7	and extra devotions. we can grow in our union
0:22.5	with Jesus in these seasons, but sometimes we could do too much and miss the heart of what the
0:28.4	season is all about. I think about years ago when I was a grad student, I was approaching one of these
0:33.0	great seasons and I had this big plan. Oh, I was going to do all these wonderful things. I had this
0:38.7	awesome program. I was going to do these extra prayers, these extra devotions, this spiritual
0:43.9	reading, these sacrifices, acts of charity, penances. And I was so excited to tell my spiritual
0:50.2	director about all that I wanted to do for Jesus in this season. And I shared with him this
0:54.7	long list. And you just sat back and just smiled and seemed very unimpressed. Very unimpressed.
1:03.1	And he just smiled and looked at me and he said, well, for me, I think I'm just going to focus on the
1:08.3	Hail Mary this season. I'm just going to try to love Jesus and Mary more by being more attentive to this prayer.
1:15.1	All he was going to do was the Hail Mary.
1:17.1	Here I was, was zooming in on all these different things I was going to do, all these sacrifices,
1:21.1	all these extra prayers and devotions.
1:23.0	And he was just going to zoom in on the Hail Mary.
1:26.3	But I'm so thankful for that wise spiritual
1:29.9	director and my conversation with him that day, because it began to plant a seed in me to realize
1:35.9	that as we approach these seasons, like we are right now, we're getting ready to enter into
1:39.6	the season of Advent, preparing our hearts for the coming of Jesus at Christmas. And we can sometimes
1:45.5	be focused too much on the externals. These are all the list of things I'm going to do. These are all
1:50.8	the little sacrifices. These are the nice devotions that I'm going to do. And we could focus on
