Summary

Like so many aspiring amateur triathletes, Cat Heimburger had a fear of the water and could not swim.  But she wanted to do a triathlon so she set her mind to learning -- and now, just a few months later, she's about to do her first IRONMAN 70.3 race, feeling incredibly confident in the water.  On this week's podcast, NTK (No Triathlon Kim) interviews Cat and Taren to find out what methods Cat used to learn to swim, and what tips Coach Taren has for athletes who are not confident in the water but water to get better!

What's up, Motivators? Taryn here with NTK, no triathlon, Kim. And our guest today is Kat Heimberger.

0:07.1

Now, Kat is one of our motive movers. She's one of our ambassadors. I started following her on

0:11.0

Instagram because she was on this journey of how to learn how to swim. She was very open about

0:16.4

being terrified of swimming, terrified of the open water. And then I'd see her making progress,

0:22.4

a little bit more at the pool. And then all of a sudden she was in open water. And then she was

0:26.3

doing these 2K open water swims and sharing this and being very open about how she had to get over

0:33.6

her fears to do that, to reach her goals of doing a race at some point. And she's actually

0:39.0

training for a half iron man right now, her first half iron man at 70.3 Memphis. And it's just

0:45.5

been really neat to see somebody who is so afraid of getting into the water actually being

0:50.9

quite good at it. Well, and what we're going to talk with her on the podcast about

0:54.3

today is how she did it because there are so many people out there who would love to try triathlon,

1:00.5

but the swim is holding them back. They don't know how to swim. They're scared of swimming,

1:04.1

scared of the water. So we talked to Kat about her personal journey. What did she do to get where she

1:10.5

got? And how was it possible? Because a lot of

1:13.1

people think, oh, there's no way. There's no way I'm ever going to do it. But guess what? If Kat did it

1:17.3

and a number of other people that will reference in the podcast, then you can do it too. So we have a lot

1:22.1

of great how-toes, a lot of little nuggets that were rolled out in this podcast that I think will be super useful. So how we did this was NTK was the star of the show hosting it.

1:31.5

Well, I don't know about that. And she asked Kat and I questions about how to breathe when

1:38.0

swimming, how to stop sinking when swimming, how to get over fear, how do you practice open

1:43.4

water swimming. Some of it were

1:45.7

questions that we gathered up online through some search tools that we use. And then some of it

1:50.4

was from submitting questions on Instagram that a lot of you submitted. And we answer all of those.
