What is going on epic gardeners? Today we are here with Jarrett of Upcycle Native Soil Fertilizer

and we're going to talk about some waste streams in your local community that you can and should be using for your garden and so I'm going to kick it off with

one that I like to use so one thing that I noticed is my local coffee shop which is

one that is not a chain well it's a chain but it's just

a chain here in San Diego so it's a local chain really great coffee really great

people that work there but they just throw their coffee grains out every

day just in the actual trash so eventually they'll make their way to a landfill somewhere.

And in my mind, I thought that was a bit of a waste, and I needed some extra nitrogen.

And coffee grounds are high in nitrogen a lot of people think that

they're acidic but actually most of that acid comes out when the coffee is brewed and so they're

very close to pH neutral so a lot of people don't want to use coffee grounds because they say,

you're going to acidify your soil, it's going to become too acidic and you won't be able to grow anything.

Well, the real truth is that when you drink the coffee

down, you're actually drinking most of that acidity down and

spent coffee grains are pretty close to pH neutral. So one thing that I used to do and I did this for about two, three weeks

before I just had way too many

coffee grounds is I would go I bought them a bucket and I just said hey

instead of throwing it in the trash why don't you just dump it into this bucket

and I'll just swing by every day and pick it up.

And so it was a great way to like build community.
