| 0:18.4 | Gospel of Luke. Someone once pointed out to me that the beginning of Luke is kind of like a musical. |
| 0:25.6 | The narrative of Jesus' conception is peppered with sudden musical interludes. |
| 0:31.7 | But the songs, they aren't just there for fun. They're programmatic. |
| 0:35.1 | They're telling us something critical about Jesus and the story that Luke is intending to tell. |
| 0:40.3 | Today we're going to hear one of my favorite songs out of this musical section of Luke. |
| 0:45.0 | And I don't know that it's a hit single, but it's a song that I'd like to put on repeat in my life. |
| 0:51.0 | Okay, so let's set up the music. In Luke 2, 21 to 40, we read the story of |
| 0:56.6 | Joseph and Mary taking Jesus after he's been born to be circumcised in the temple. |
| 1:01.8 | This is what it says. On the eighth day, when it was time to |
| 1:05.6 | circumcise the child, he was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he was |
| 1:10.6 | conceived. When the time came for the purification rights required by the law of Moses, |
| 1:15.6 | Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem and presented him to the Lord. Now this might sound like a |
| 1:21.3 | throwaway setup statement, but it's not. Luke is making a point. |
| 1:25.4 | He's trying to double underline the fact that Mary and Joseph were good law-abiding Jews. |
| 1:31.5 | Now that word law, which is used in Luke and I just used it it refers to |
| 1:35.9 | the first five books of the Bible which were called the Torah and what most people |
| 1:40.8 | don't realize is that the Torah is not made up primarily of laws and regulations. |
| 1:46.4 | Those certainly end up making up a large portion of these five books. |
| 1:50.4 | But the majority of the Torah is actually narrative. In other words, being a good Torah |
