Summary

For the past years, we have paid a lot of attention to the fight for democratic values in countries where they are newly under threat. But what can activists do to stand up for democracy in countries where they already have to fear imprisonment, or worse? In the latest episode of The Good Fight, we feature the voices of activists from Asia and Europe. First, Yascha Mounk talks to Andrei Sannikov about the ongoing protests against Alexander Lukashenko. Then, he talks to Nathan Law about the new security law imposed by mainland China, and the impact it is having on young democracy activists. What strategies can help activists advance their goals even when they face very steep odds? Please do listen and spread the word about The Good Fight. I'm asked what can we do. I think that there are a lot of clever people and

a lot of experience in the West. Political will is needed. If you ask me for a

until the left starts to push back on some of the crazier things within itself.

Now as some of you know I don't think that concerns about liberal tendencies on the left are altogether

1:19.4

picked out of finair. There is a real atmosphere of intolerance rising on parts of the left.

Even some elected democratic politicians have not been as good as they should have been in calling out, for example, violent

1:36.5

forms of protest on left fringes.

1:41.6

There's also a worrying movement to throw out the core parts of the

1:48.4

constitutional to pack the Supreme Court. None of that is trivial. Nevertheless, it would be a huge mistake, both a

1:58.1

moral and a strategic mistake, to vote for Donald Trump in the hope of checking a liberal political tendencies on the left.

2:10.0

There are two reasons for that. The first is that Donald Trump himself is a bigger and more

present danger to core philosophically liberal values.
