Summary

I was recently on the Brofessional Development podcast, and it was a great chat, so I wanted to share this excerpt. We dug into something I’m extremely familiar with: what’s needed to building a thriving online community.  I break it down into practical steps: what kind of community to build, how to consistently provide them value, and how to keep them engaged and connected. Gratitude to the men at Brofessional Development for having me on! Hey everybody. This is Brad here with the professional development. And today we're going to have a little bit different style of a podcast. We are going to let Connor Beaton from Man Talks give us a little bit of insight on how he has built a

0:22.1

community around men and masculinity. Yeah, so this is a great question in many ways. And I'm just

0:28.0

going to talk about how to build community in general, because this is a few key components

0:32.6

that I think are important. The first one is to know what your community actually wants from you.

0:39.6

So what problem are you trying to solve for them? It's a really important piece to just begin

0:44.3

with as you're flushing out or trying to identify the type of community that you want to build,

0:50.4

whether it's a community around a podcast or around personal development,

0:54.3

professional development, it's a community around health and fitness. You want to be able

0:59.2

to identify what problem are you actually solving for those people, whether it's weight loss

1:05.2

or you're overcoming their loneliness or whatever that might be. Because there are a few different kinds of communities that you can then build from that

1:16.0

problem.

1:16.9

So based on the problem, you can then build either an education-based community.

1:22.1

You can build a training-based community or a discussion-based community.

1:26.5

And those three different forms of community

1:29.2

will help to just arrange the way that you interact, the way that you write your sales copy,

1:35.7

the way that you write your emails, the way that you actually build your community. Each of those

1:40.2

communities, education, training, and discussion-based communities are all going to serve

1:45.3

different purposes. Now, if you're building a business, you might actually have, let's say,

1:50.8

a discussion-based community that's free on Facebook or a different platform, and then a

1:57.6

membership-based platform that is education-based or training-based higher up on your value ladder.

2:05.2

But that's where you want to start.

2:06.8

What problem are you solving?
